Winter storm, blizzard hit Canada

(CNN) — Air traffic control towers are being closed across British Columbia as a blizzard moved across Canada on Wednesday.

The province has issued a special weather statement, called a “red alert,” that warns travelers of poor conditions ahead of the storm. It says up to 100 millimeters (4 inches) of snow is expected to fall across parts of the province, while wind gusts could reach 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour.

The province is advising residents to stay off roads and to put their homes “under a snowfall warning.”

Transport Canada also issued a weather warning urging airplane operators to “place their aircraft in the safest position possible before departure.”

A special weather statement for southeastern Quebec warned against travel Wednesday night due to rain, strong winds and snow. A “red alert” was in effect for Orange County on the Saint Lawrence River, while a yellow alert warned about flooding.

“Evacuation orders” for properties with “threat of flooding” were issued across Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Public Safety said on its website.
